Description: Some people call violet game trailers “DEI Purple.” Learn where the label came from, why it resurfaced in 2026, and why a color palette cannot prove a studio's intentions.

“DEI Purple” is an online label used to suggest that games with prominent purple or magenta visuals were shaped by diversity, equity and inclusion priorities. It is usually a criticism, sometimes a joke, rather than an established art-direction term.

Why is purple supposed to mean something political?

DEI stands for diversity, equity and inclusion. In arguments about games, those words often refer to characters, stories or studio decisions. The “DEI Purple” claim takes a shortcut: a trailer looks purple, therefore the developers must have certain values, and the game may be bad. That is a remarkable amount of information to extract from a screenshot. Critics of the idea often mock that leap.

Where did the phrase come from?

Know Your Meme traces an early version of the argument to an August 15, 2024 Steam forum post discussing purple in games such as Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The idea continued circulating, with objections as well as supporters. In 2026, streamer Asmongold discussed purple visuals associated with God of War: Laufey. A related September 29 YouTube short drew more than 635,000 views in roughly one day, according to the site. Views of one video are not a count of people who agree.

Can purple predict whether a game is good?

Violet can suggest magic, nighttime, dramatic lighting or simply an artist's preferred palette. A color cannot establish the studio's internal motivations or the quality of its controls, writing and finished product.

When someone says “DEI Purple,” ask whether they mean “I dislike this look” or “this look proves an agenda.” The first is an aesthetic judgment. The second needs separate evidence. Purple pixels do not come with minutes from the development meeting.
