Description: Could David Martinez be resurrected in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2? Here's what the creators have actually said, what the new story promises, and why the fan theory persists. Spoilers for the first series.

The answer is that the creative team has deliberately chosen not to revive David as the lead of Edgerunners 2. The new ten-episode anime premieres on Netflix on October 20, 2026, with a different crew. A background reference or flashback is a separate question; no such appearance is established by the official synopsis as of October 17.

Spoiler warning: The first show's ending is discussed below.

Why resurrection still sounds plausible to some fans

David Martinez dies after his confrontation with Adam Smasher. Yet Cyberpunk is a universe in which minds can be copied and corporate technology can turn identity into a commodity. A September 2026 fan thread suggested that Arasaka might have preserved David as an engram and rebuilt him in another body. Other participants pushed back, arguing that the new cast deserves its own story. Those are identifiable, opposing fan reactions—not a poll or evidence of a hidden plot twist.

What the people making the anime have said

CD PROJEKT RED's July 4, 2025 announcement opened by affirming David's death and described the sequel as a standalone ten-episode story. In an interview published October 16, 2026, showrunner Bartosz Sztybor said he receives many daily messages asking for David back. He nevertheless defended the decision to make something genuinely different, reasoning that giving viewers the resurrection they request could ultimately disappoint them. The point is a creative choice, not a technical claim that resurrection could never happen anywhere in Cyberpunk lore.

Meet the new people Night City is about to chew up

The official story introduces Weak Kingsley, a once-famous edgerunner who has lost his edge; D, a nomad chasing revenge and a corporate secret; Roman, who wants to record the truth; and Talia. The new angle isn't simply who can survive a gunfight. Roman's interest in images raises a sharper question: who controls the story of a violent city once the shooting stops? That is an interpretation of the announced premise, not a leaked ending.

So what should viewers expect?

Expect a new tragedy or triumph built around a new crew, rather than a reset button for David's finale. Watch the October 20 release for any actual callbacks. Night City has a remarkable talent for replacing its heroes while keeping the machinery that destroys them running perfectly.
