If you already own a long coat, a long-sleeved knit makes sense as an extra winter layer. A plain white secondhand shirt for ¥700 might be a bargain, but short sleeves make it a different purchase.

This shopping story began with a harmless question: what winter clothes would suit me? The answer wandered through several completely different wardrobes.

Apparently one good suit means leather shoes forever

The first recommendations were long coats, tailored trousers, neat sweaters and leather shoes. The reason: the shopper had once liked how they looked in a suit.

But liking a suit does not mean wanting every weekend outfit to dress like its cousin. The advice had become stuck on the wrong clue.

Vintage fashion was the next detour: brown work jackets, retro cardigans and old-fashioned blousons. Four outfit images appeared. None were liked. Enjoying secondhand shopping does not automatically mean loving vintage workwear.

The useful clue was CLEL

The actual reference was CLEL, a Japanese clothing brand sold on ZOZOTOWN. Shape, fabric texture and the overall outfit mattered more than the label “formal” or “retro.”

Several CLEL jackets made the shortlist, including a high-neck padded style, a clean short blouson and faux leather. Finally, progress.

Then came the revelation: “I already own a long coat.”

After all that outerwear advice, the missing item was meant to go underneath an existing coat.

Uniqlo set the price target

Uniqlo Japan listed its washable Milano Rib crew-neck sweater at ¥3,990 when checked on October 17, 2026. The product can be machine-washed with a laundry net.

Why not search for a used long-sleeved sweater that serves a similar purpose for less? It is a sensible plan, provided you check pilling, marks, stretched collars, tiny holes, smell, care instructions and sleeve length.

The ¥700 victory came with a twist

“Found a plain white used one for ¥700. That'll do, haha.”

Cheap, simple, easy to combine with a long coat. Mission accomplished, surely.

“It's short-sleeved, though.”

Short-sleeved? During a winter sweater search?

A white tee works as a base layer, including in colder months. It does not replace the warmth of a long-sleeved sweater. Although ¥3,990 minus ¥700 equals ¥3,290, those prices are for different kinds of clothing.

What actually worked

If you need a white short-sleeved top and its condition is good, ¥700 may be excellent value. For winter warmth, the long-sleeved search remains open.

It helps to ask three questions in order: what style do I like, what do I own already, and what job should the next item do?

After learning all that, the shortlist contained a summer shirt.

Winter quest ongoing. Summer item unlocked.
