Description: The Crew Motorfest launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026, but Ubisoft still requires an internet connection. Here's how that affects portable play, why The Crew 2 is different, and what the promise of an offline mode really covers.
As of October 15, 2026, The Crew Motorfest on Nintendo Switch 2 needs an internet connection even when you're playing alone. Ubisoft said so in its July 8 announcement of the October 8 release. The company has committed to an offline future for Motorfest, but it hasn't announced when that option will arrive on Switch 2.
A handheld console is not automatically an offline game
Motorfest invites you to collect and customize cars, explore a Hawaiian setting and race through themed challenges. The Switch 2 release comes in retail and digital editions. But a physical edition doesn't cancel the online requirement. You can bring the game on a train; you still need a dependable connection to play it today.
There's a specific example of the concern. On October 14, a player asked in the r/The_Crew subreddit whether Motorfest had become playable offline, explaining that they wanted a Switch 2 racing game for travel and train rides. Replies recalled Ubisoft's promise but couldn't provide a release date. That's a real discussion among individual players, rather than evidence that every fan feels the same way.
Didn't Ubisoft already release an offline mode?
For The Crew 2, yes. For Motorfest, not yet. Ubisoft launched The Crew 2's hybrid online/offline mode on October 16, 2025. The offline experience omits network-dependent features such as multiplayer modes and leaderboards. That was a significant step toward preserving a game, but it didn't secretly update the newer Motorfest.
Ubisoft has also discussed eventually adding offline functionality to Motorfest. The date, save-file behavior and exact restrictions on Switch 2 remain unanswered by the existing announcements. Don't mistake the rules for The Crew 2 for confirmed details of a different title.
Is Motorfest worth buying for your commute?
If you play mainly at home with reliable Wi-Fi, evaluate what the game offers right now. If the point is to race on trains, through tunnels, or during trips without internet, wait for an official Motorfest offline update. A roadmap promise isn't the same as a feature you can actually use today.
Bottom line: Switch 2 can put Hawaii in your backpack, but the network still holds the car keys. The roads are open-world; the ability to drive them is, for now, limited by the signal bars.
