Description: A Steam Deck that refuses to boot does not automatically take your game saves with it. The crucial distinction is Steam Cloud versus local-only files.
Short answer: saves that successfully synced to Steam Cloud may still be recoverable. Files stored only on the broken handheld are at risk during repair or replacement.
On October 4, 2026, someone asked the Steam Deck community for help. Their device would not boot, although its LED still reacted. After talking to support, they were preparing for an RMA—and wondering how to rescue game saves, non-Steam titles and other programs first. Replacing the hardware is one thing. Replaying a hundred-hour campaign is quite another.
Steam Cloud is not a backup of the entire Deck
Valve says Steam Cloud syncs files designated by games that support it. If a sync completed, logging into the same Steam account on another computer can bring those files back. Not every game supports the feature, and synchronization can be turned off globally or per game.
Steam normally synchronizes around game sessions. A failure during the last session could leave the cloud with an earlier save. Non-Steam games and separately installed applications do not automatically gain Steam Cloud backup; some titles offer their own online saves, which need separate checking.
Before sending it away
On another PC, check the game's Cloud support and whether synced data exists. Back up any saves already present on that PC before sorting out sync conflicts. Do not accidentally replace good progress with a fresh, empty save.
If irreplaceable files might live only on the Deck, do not factory-reset it, reinstall SteamOS, or replace storage first. Ask Steam Support what happens to the storage during the proposed service and whether data recovery is possible. Nothing guarantees recovery. The October 4 post does not tell us whether its author ultimately got those files back.
Is the save gone?
Synced save: potentially safe. Local-only save: still at risk. The question is not just where you bought the game, but where the game actually stored your progress. A dead Deck is not proof that your characters are gone too.
