Red boxes move opposite your input; blue boxes follow it. If your character walks into a wall, the character stays put but the boxes can still move. Use that separation to position the boxes, preview each move by holding an arrow, and place every box on a target. Matching a level's best solution earns three stars.

Play the browser edition

Play Out of Step on its creator's itch.io page. It launched on October 26, 2026. The free browser build contains 20 levels from the first three worlds. The advertised five worlds and 155 puzzles describe the full game, not 155 free web levels. There is no need to invent a final boss or an ending: each puzzle ends when all boxes reach their targets.

Controls and the essential rules

Input or object Effect
Arrow keys or WASD Move your character; boxes respond to the same input
Red Counter box Moves in the opposite direction
Blue Follow box Moves in the same direction
Walk into a wall Character stays; boxes can still shift
Open pit Swallows a box; the character cannot cross it
Hold an arrow Preview the outcome before committing
Z / R Undo a move without a limit / restart the level
Phone Swipe or use the on-screen arrow pad

A practical solving routine

  1. Read the board as two different movement systems. A rightward input tries to send red boxes left and blue boxes right.
  2. Locate every target. Decide which boxes need to separate rather than assuming that moving toward one target helps all of them.
  3. Check the walls around your character. When you can press toward a wall, test whether a stationary character and moving boxes create the alignment you need.
  4. Hold the intended arrow to preview the board. In the Fall world, also watch for boxes approaching pits and for paths your character must still traverse.
  5. Commit only when the preview helps. Put every box on its target. To improve a clear, use unlimited Z undo, R restart and the built-in hints to compare routes with fewer unnecessary inputs. The odd part is that walking straight into a wall can be productive. Here, the player's failed movement does not mean the entire board is frozen.

Three stars and version boundaries

The creator says every puzzle has a best solution and awards three stars for matching it. No verified move-by-move optimal routes for the 20 browser levels were available in the inspected official description, so this guide explains the rules rather than claiming exact level solutions. The planned full version also describes Gate puzzles, where a switch holds a door open, and Turn puzzles, where green boxes move a quarter-turn clockwise relative to your input. Those belong to later worlds, not the first three worlds represented in the browser demo.

FAQ and sources

Is a red box moving backward a bug? No. Can a wall move be useful? Yes: boxes may move while you stay still. Can I undo a bad move? Z offers unlimited undo. Are all 155 puzzles free online? No, the web build has 20. What is the exact three-star sequence for level 17? Not verified here. Source: official Out of Step game page, checked October 26, 2026. Controls, rules and edition scope are developer-stated; the wall-based planning sequence is a reasoned strategy, not a claim of a completed playthrough.
