Detective Tsuda: did VIVANT just launch his fifth case live on TBS?

A live celebrity quiz show is supposed to have quizzes. At TBS's All-Star Kanshasai on October 10, 2026, the closing stretch suddenly offered a gunshot, a fallen assistant and a demand for someone to solve a crime. This was a staged television mystery, not a real shooting.[1]

Then Drum, a character from the serious action drama VIVANT, made a call. On the screen appeared Yusuke Nogi, played by Masato Sakai. Nogi's proposed solution? Give the case to comedian Atsuhiro Tsuda.

A national-scale spy drama had apparently discovered the least enthusiastic detective in Japan.

0. Is this Detective Tsuda's fifth installment?

There were four numbered mystery cases through December 2025. The October 2026 launch is therefore the fifth case in sequence, but news reports at the time did not confirm the official title “Episode 5.”[1][2]

There is another counting trap. Some previous mysteries ran over two broadcasts, and there have also been special editions. Five cases does not mean five individual television broadcasts.

1. How did a live quiz show turn into a crime scene?

The October 10 special celebrated All-Star Kanshasai's 70th edition, with more than a hundred guests and over six hours of live television. The broadcaster had already advertised participation by members of the VIVANT cast.[1][3]

Near the end, a theatrical gunshot interrupted proceedings. An assistant fell, and host Koji Imada asked who could solve the supposed crime.

Imagine expecting a general-knowledge question, only to find yourself watching the hiring process for a detective. The show did not change channels. It changed genres.

2. Why did VIVANT's Nogi pick Tsuda?

Drum contacted Nogi on the studio screen. Unable to attend himself, Nogi nominated Tsuda and asked Drum to support him.[1]

That is the perfect mismatch. VIVANT deals in dangerous missions and elaborate plans. Detective Tsuda, a recurring comedy segment on Wednesday's Downtown, puts a reluctant comedian inside a mystery until he finds the culprit.

One drama's formidable operative effectively outsourced the emergency to a man who wanted to keep his normal schedule. The crossover was so grand that the actual case almost became the side story.

3. The four earlier Detective Tsuda cases

Here is the sequence, counting mysteries rather than individual broadcasts.[2]

  • Case 1, January 25, 2023: a mountain guesthouse and the first impossible-to-escape mystery.
  • Case 2, November 8 and 15, 2023: The Cursed Temari Song and the Uninvited Man.
  • Case 3, December 11 and 18, 2024: Thief vs. Detective — The Targeted Swan Song.
  • Case 4, December 17 and 24, 2025: The Electrified Trap and a Century of Prayer, including a leap into a mystery from a hundred years earlier.
  • New launch, October 10, 2026: the live All-Star Kanshasai crossover, with its official episode number still unconfirmed.[1]

4. The famous “World 1” and “World 2” just collided with live TV

Tsuda's shorthand is simple: World 1 is the fictional murder-mystery setting. World 2 is ordinary reality, where television is being made and Tsuda has an actual life.[4]

The comedy comes from being dragged out of World 2 and forced to behave as if World 1's crime is real. This time World 1 invaded a completely different, live TBS production.

The studio audience was watching a quiz show. Tsuda was attending a quiz show. Then someone seemed to change his job description without notice. Even switching programs no longer guarantees an escape route.

5. Tsuda's response was more relatable than heroic

When summoned, Tsuda objected to the timing: why launch a whole mystery so late in the broadcast? He also worried aloud about a commercial commitment scheduled for the following day. He eventually said he would try to solve it and left the studio.[1]

The usual detective announces a search for truth. This one first checks tomorrow's calendar. It feels less like a crime thriller than getting an urgent work request five minutes before going home.

6. Why does this crossover work so well?

Everyone around Tsuda treats the situation with absolute seriousness. Nogi delivers the assignment in character. The host needs a detective. Drum is ready to help. Only the supposed hero keeps reacting like a working adult whose evening has been hijacked.

That contrast is the whole joke. Big-budget drama energy meets a deeply inconvenient change of plans. And because the trap appeared inside a live, unrelated show, viewers could enjoy the surprise at the same moment as Tsuda.

7. What was actually confirmed?

As of the October 10 broadcast reports, the case had begun, Nogi had named Tsuda, and Tsuda had departed to investigate. The culprit, resolution, next airdate and official “Episode 5” label had not been established by those reports.[1]

The story's punchline is already complete: an elite operative couldn't make it, so Japanese live television drafted a comedian with other plans. Crime solving by sudden staff reassignment.
