Title: Joanne McNally's Traitors slip-up: why the lantern made her correction worse Description: The 15 October 2026 roundtable explained: the task she never attended, the lantern detail and who was actually banished.

Irish comedian Joanne McNally agreed that a frightening challenge had been awful, even though she had not taken part. She hastily clarified that she was not there. On a show dedicated to identifying secret liars, ordinary sympathy can sound like privileged knowledge. The twist is that Joanne was a Faithful, not a Traitor.

The episode and the rules

The exchange came during the roundtable in series two, episode five of BBC One's The Celebrity Traitors, broadcast in the UK on 15 October 2026. Traitors conceal their identities; Faithful players try to expose them. “Murder” means elimination within the game, not actual violence. In an earlier hide-and-seek-style task, Ross Kemp, Romesh Ranganathan, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Rob Beckett faced elimination. Rob was the one who left. When Ross described how frightening the experience felt, Joanne responded as though she had experienced it too.

Why was the lantern funny?

In normal conversation, her comment would simply mean “that sounds dreadful.” Here, sounding like a witness to a challenge you never attended can suggest you know the Traitors' secrets. Joanne clarified that she had not been present. The companion programme The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked highlighted another part of the exchange: she reportedly referred to watching from a cloak and mimed holding a lantern. Presenter Ed Gamble noted the absurdity of adding more props while trying to explain yourself. The lantern was a comic detail, not proof she witnessed the event.

What happened next?

Joanne was not banished. Hannah Fry, who really was a Traitor, was voted out. Joanne voted for Sebastian Croft instead. On 16 October she joked on Instagram about confessing to things she had never done. James Acaster later said on Ireland's The Late Late Show that he sometimes wished he could stop her misguided guesses.

Conclusion

An innocent player tried to be empathetic, sounded guilty, and then made her explanation stranger. She had nothing to hide but somehow sounded like the person with the biggest secret.
