Can closing an app transport you to 2007? That is the deliberately literal joke people made about “If You Log Out, It's Still 2007.” The phrase came from a September 2026 YouTube video about stepping away from social media. Once a screenshot of the title circulated on X, people began treating it as a claim about the entire outside world.

Where did the phrase come from?

Creator Emilymarie uploaded the video on September 9, 2026. She described growing up online in the 2000s, watching the internet change, and noticing how constant online activity affected her well-being. Her practical point was to spend less time scrolling and make room for calmer, more satisfying activities.

On September 14, X user @amritwt posted a screenshot of the thumbnail and title. That small image travelled farther than the context around it. Some readers took the wording as a promise that the world would feel like 2007 the moment they logged off.

What did people do with it?

One Instagram joke asked whether logging off would let someone experience baseball player Grady Sizemore's prime again. Other replies pointed to AI-made advertising and crowds staring at smartphones: both are still there when your own screen goes dark. Some discussions wandered into inflammatory arguments about immigration, illustrating just how far the screenshot travelled from the video's original subject.

The misunderstanding is the story. Emilymarie was talking about your relationship with the internet. The meme asked whether the calendar outside your window had magically rewound. Those are two very different questions hiding in one excellent title.

Why is it funny?

As a time machine, logging out would be spectacularly cheap. Forgetting your password might then become a historical emergency.

As an idea for everyday life, it is less magical and more useful: taking a break can change how your day feels, even while everyone else keeps scrolling. The joke sends you to 2007; the useful part brings you back to the present.
