Description: Team Cherry promised a free nautical expansion for 2026. Here's what its announcement, March patch and October fan discussion actually establish.
As of October 23, 2026, Team Cherry's stated target for Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea of Sorrow remains 2026, but no specific release date has been announced. A move to 2027 is being discussed by players, not confirmed by the developer.
What the studio promised
On December 15, 2025, Australian studio Team Cherry unveiled Silksong's first major expansion. Sea of Sorrow is planned to add maritime-themed areas, bosses and tools, free for all players. The studio said more details would arrive shortly before release.[1] It did not promise monthly progress reports.
On March 16, 2026, Patch 5 was described as the last significant update intended before the expansion.[2] That establishes a sequence, not a countdown. Nothing in the patch notes guarantees the DLC will arrive a particular number of weeks later.
Why October feels uncomfortable
On October 14, a player on r/Silksong asked whether the 2026 window remained believable or whether 2027 was more likely. Replies ranged from confidence to Christmas guesses and jokes about release dates.[3] Those are real examples of discussion, not a representative poll of the entire fanbase.
Silksong itself took years to arrive, so another stretch of silence feels familiar. Yet the original announcement explicitly placed detailed news close to launch. Silence in October can be frustrating without proving a schedule change.
What will settle the question?
Watch for a dated Team Cherry announcement, platform availability and actual store listings. Physical-edition shipping dates or social-media emojis do not confirm the DLC's release. If December 31 passes without a launch, the original window will have been missed; that still would not establish a specific 2027 date.
Bottom line: The free ticket and the nautical destination are confirmed. The departure time is the missing detail, and only the studio can put it on the board.
