Japan plans to launch its expanded Android My Number Card service on October 20, 2026. It will work through Google Wallet, but a phone that runs Wallet is not automatically eligible for the ID feature. The Digital Agency says detailed device criteria will be posted by launch.

What changes?

The update adds identity-attribute verification for supported in-person checks, including identity, age and residency. Existing Android electronic certificates already support various online government procedures. Each organization must support reading the new card before you can use it there.

Device compatibility

Check your Android version and update Google Wallet and Google Play services. Wallet generally requires Android 9 or newer. The Japanese digital ID also requires a security chip meeting additional standards, so Android 9 alone does not confirm eligibility.

If setup fails

If setup fails, first check whether the service has launched, then consult the official device requirements, app updates and the exact error shown. Avoid unofficial model lists presented as confirmed.

Takeaway

Being able to open a digital wallet does not mean every type of ID fits inside it.
