Two more seasons were announced, but Smiling Friends ended after Season 3. Here's why its creators stopped and whether the show could return.

As of October 15, 2026, Smiling Friends has ended with Season 3. The previously announced fourth and fifth seasons are no longer moving forward. Creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack made that decision themselves in February 2026.[1]

Why did a renewed show end?

Adult Swim had renewed the series for two more seasons in 2025. On February 26, 2026, Hadel and Cusack explained that finishing Season 3 left them exhausted but also proud of what they had made. They preferred to stop while they still felt good about the show rather than continue without the same enthusiasm. They said Adult Swim supported their decision.[1] A renewal can provide production resources; it cannot promise an endless supply of ideas for Charlie and Pim's next ridiculous assignment.

Were the April episodes a proper finale?

Two already completed Season 3 episodes aired on April 12, 2026. The creators described them as extra episodes, not a grand conclusion written to wrap up the series.[1] Individual Reddit replies showed different reactions: some respected ending on a high note, while others felt blindsided after the announcement of Seasons 4 and 5.[3]

Could it come back?

Hadel later clarified that only he and Cusack can speak for the show's future. They remain open to new episodes or specials if circumstances are right.[2] A comeback is possible, not scheduled. The show about making people smile has chosen a surprisingly human ending: its makers needed a break.
