Description: The One Piece anime paused after episode 1180 and is due back in 2027. Toei's roughly 26-episode yearly format is meant to adapt the manga at a better pace, not to end the show. The date of episode 1181 remains to be announced.

One Piece is scheduled to return in 2027, and its anime has not been cancelled. Fewer broadcast weeks don't automatically mean a slower story. Toei Animation says the new schedule should let each episode carry more of Eiichiro Oda's manga. Whether the episodes actually deliver on that promise is what fans will be watching.

Episode 1180 aired in Japan on September 27, 2026. The official One Piece account thanked viewers for the year's final episode and pointed to a 2027 return. That's quite a place to leave the Straw Hats: the Elbaph adventure is underway, but viewers have to wait until next year to board the ship again.

Why cut the schedule to about 26 episodes?

Toei outlined a two-part annual schedule in November 2025, with the revised format beginning in 2026. Instead of trying to fill nearly every week, production will focus on roughly 26 new episodes across two broadcast blocks. The studio's stated goal is to bring more of the manga's content, rhythm and pacing into the adaptation.

Two different clocks are involved here. The release calendar can slow down while the plot moves faster inside each episode. If the show covers more meaningful ground per installment, a shorter season could still feel more satisfying. But Toei's plan alone does not establish how many manga chapters a future episode will adapt—or when the entire Elbaph arc will finish.

What are viewers actually worried about?

In a Reddit discussion of the schedule change, one commenter worried that the series might still adapt just one manga chapter per episode, leaving viewers with the same slow pacing and far fewer releases. Another recalled hoping a previous break would fix pacing and being disappointed. Other commenters welcomed the decision as overdue. Those are individual reactions, not a measured consensus.

That distinction turns the hiatus into a test. Fans aren't just asking how long they must wait; they're asking what that wait buys them. A return date will end the silence, but an episode that meaningfully advances the giants' island adventure would answer the bigger concern.

Episode 1181 has a confirmed return year—2027—but no precise premiere date in the cited announcement. For now, the useful question isn't whether the ship has sunk. It's whether its next voyage will finally have a stronger current.
