The February 2026 video celebrating NieR:Automata reaching ten million units ends with “to be continued…”. That hints at future activity for the property, but it does not officially announce NieR:Automata 2 or any other new game. Some players are excited; others are bracing for another merchandise reveal.
Why the skepticism?
The video revisits more than the original RPG. It celebrates ports, collaborations and merchandise too. After that montage, the promise of continuation could apply to any of them. An active franchise and a new playable story are not the same thing.
In a Reddit discussion beginning February 20, players expressed hope for a proper new game, while others joked about shop items and crossovers. Those are real, attributable reactions in one discussion, not a survey of all fans. The uncertainty is built into the teaser itself: it gives the audience a promise without naming the product.
Doesn't ten million units guarantee a sequel?
The milestone demonstrates enduring interest, not a release schedule. No developer, supported platform or gameplay concept is established by that final line. Fans also want different outcomes: a direct continuation with familiar characters, a new corner of the NieR universe, or a way to revisit the story of the discontinued mobile title NieR Re[in]carnation.
A named project, confirmation that it is a game, supported platforms and actual gameplay would make the next announcement materially different. Another collaboration might satisfy “to be continued” in a broad sense without answering the question players are asking.
The takeaway
NieR:Automata's future has been teased; a new playable sequel still needs its own announcement. The clever sting is that “continued” promises another page, but never says whether that page is on a game screen or in a merchandise catalogue.
